1. Journey to California | Sam and Emanuel

Emanuel was surprised that the first shift from Sam was as peaceful as it was. He glanced at the clock on the man’s dash. “Three hours” he replied, “We may be nearing a stop soon. Did you sleep well?” Sam seemed alright, which was relieving.

“…yeah. Yeah, I did.” Sam looked just as surprised. “Shocking, I know.” Cricket’s ears perked up slightly and he stroked her ears idly. “A rest stop sounds good…”

Emanuel might have smiled a little. “Yes. That is very good.”

It wasn’t very long that the blue sign came up on the horizon, and the man pulled over. He complimented them both on how quiet they were, and how well-behaved Cricket was. Emanuel climbed out, doing a stretch even though he felt comfortable enough.

Journey to California | Sam and Emanuel

    savedtheworldonce:

Sam didn’t expect to sleep as soundly as he did.

In his dreams, he was flying. He knew it was a dream because Dean was flying too, and Dean hated flying. They didn’t say anything, they just sort of drifted. Somehow Sam knew they were trying to find heaven, because that’s where their parents were, were Castiel was, and if they just found mom and dad and Cas everything would be fine. They’d be fine.

    They had to be fine.

Sam woke up gradually, drifting from the clouds to the backseat of the car bit by bit. When he opened his eyes, his neck hurt, but he didn’t feel quite so tired. “…how long was I out…?” he asked, still a bit groggy.

Emanuel was surprised that the first shift from Sam was as peaceful as it was. He glanced at the clock on the man’s dash. “Three hours” he replied, “We may be nearing a stop soon. Did you sleep well?” Sam seemed alright, which was relieving.

Sam nodded. He was already half-asleep again by the time Emanuel spoke. “‘kay…”

Emanuel rested a hand on Sam’s shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze before turning to look back out of the window. The sun was climbing and the light was no longer as stark, though it was about as bright.

The light should have bothered Sam, but he was way too tired. He might have mumbled something about waking him when they stopped. He might not have. He fell into sleep too fast to notice.

Emanuel relished in the quiet. Their driver glanced back at them every once in a while, but spotted Sam passed out in the back and decided to just keep to himself. Eventually, even Cricket started snoring quietly from where she was curled up between them.

Sam leaned against the window and tried, in vain, to keep his eyes open. Whatever slow-paced country western song was playing on the radio didn’t help matters. “‘Manuel?” he muttered, trying to keep his eyes open.

Emanuel looked over at his friend. He could see Sam’s heavy-lidded eyes but he held off on any reactions one way or the other. “Yes, Sam?”

Emanuel watched the truck stop slide away from them until there was only the grey-black strip of road. The wheat fields where they first found Cricket had long faded into corn, a little sickly and short from the drought. Emanuel watched it contently. It wasn’t as nice as walking, he thought, but Sam was weary, and he was happy to let him rest.

Journey to California | Sam and Emanuel

    savedtheworldonce:

Sam joined Cricket and Emanuel in the backseat. Almost the minute he sat down and buckled up, he felt the weariness seep into his muscles. He’d  been tired a lot lately. Don’t sleep, Sam, you don’t want to have a nightmare in front of strangers…

It really was nice, though, he reflected as the car pulled out of the parking lot and started driving, not having to walk.

Emanuel watched the truck stop slide away from them until there was only the grey-black strip of road. The wheat fields where they first found Cricket had long faded into corn, a little sickly and short from the drought. Emanuel watched it contently. “We can make the detour. It’s not like we have a deadline or anything.” Sam approached the car. “Thanks again for giving us a lift…”

“Yes,” Emanuel added on quickly, picking Cricket up and arranging her in the back, “We greatly appreciate your kindness.”

“It’s no problem.” The driver smiled as he opened the back so Sam could put their bags in the trunk. “Happy to help.”

Sam was just relieved that they wouldn’t be walking. “Cricket will behave, I promise…”

“Yes,” Emanuel agreed. He ended up handing his bags to Sam so that he could lavish Cricket with rubs and calm her down. Once she was laying down and panting happily, he got in his seat and buckled in.
